Rider Call by Plyntr

Rider Call is free. Questions: joe@plyntr.com

Create or Join a ride, allow microphone, Bluetooth, and local network when asked, and keep the app running during the ride. Voice is not end-to-end encrypted. See Privacy and Terms.

How do I create or join a ride?

Open Rider Call. Enter a display name, then Create a ride to get a ride code, or Join with a code someone else created. The microphone opens after Create or Join. The mic stays live during a ride unless you tap Mute. While muted, no audio is sent. Incoming audio still plays while muted. Mute stays on through a reconnect. Each new ride starts unmuted. There is no push-to-talk button.

Which permissions does it need?

Some of these show a prompt.

  • Microphone — send ride audio
  • Bluetooth scan and connect — talk through a paired helmet headset
  • Local network (iOS only) — nearby rider links
  • Android notifications — show "Microphone is on for the ride"
  • Foreground service — keep the microphone running in the background
  • Battery-optimization exemption — reduce the chance the phone sleeps the ride
  • Background audio and VoIP — continue the ride when the screen is off
  • INTERNET (Android, install-time) — reach the relay
  • ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE (Android, install-time) — see whether the phone is online
  • MODIFY_AUDIO_SETTINGS (Android, install-time) — route voice to a headset
  • WAKE_LOCK (Android, install-time) — keep the ride from sleeping
  • iOS Bluetooth-central background mode — stay connected to a helmet headset in the background

If a prompt is denied, Create or Join cannot send or hear voice. Open system settings for Rider Call and allow those permissions, then try again.

It won't connect, or it drops

Check that you and the other riders used the same ride code, that microphone permission is on, and that the phone has a data path the relay can reach. Leave the ride and Join again. The relay is in Mumbai; a weak or firewalled network can fail even if the phone shows signal. We do not promise a connection or that it will reconnect on its own.

Bluetooth helmet headsets

Rider Call sends voice over a standard Bluetooth headset voice-call / HFP path. Pair the headset in the phone’s Bluetooth settings first, then Create or Join. If you hear phone audio in the earpiece instead of the helmet, pick the headset as the call audio device. Not every headset behaves the same.

Battery and background use

The mic stays live during a ride unless you tap Mute. While muted, no audio is sent. Incoming audio still plays while muted. Mute stays on through a reconnect. Each new ride starts unmuted. Background audio uses battery. Leave the ride when you are done. If the phone sleeps the app or kills background audio, you may need to open Rider Call again and Join.
